from Wikipedia: "The name "Valentine" (Priest Valentio) does not occur in the earliest list of Roman martyrs, compiled by the Chronographer of 354. The feast of St. Valentine was first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine among those "... whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God." As Gelasius implied, nothing was known, even then, about the lives of any of these martyrs."

For all the unknown saints and forgotten gods, whose works are countless and nameless in the brief and tattered histories of Man, keep them in Your sight; for all who seek love, and have not found it (may the One Source give them guidance and courage to seek further and better and wiser); for all who are prisoners of love, abused or neglected, afraid to leave or unwilling to break their half of a disgraced vow (may the One Source give them comfort in their distress and courage to break free); for the souls of those who have died in Despair, lift them into Your light; for young lovers, grant them the wisdom they do not know they lack; for those who have lost a loved one, comfort them in their grief, and give them greater faith to know that in Your embrace, all hearts will be mended and all who knew Love will be reunited.

for she who is called the Beautiful One, God's Promise to the Clan of the Gray Home, for God is Gracious; May she have wisdom as well as beauty, strength of spirit as well as grace; may she never lack caring protectors in times of need; may she know truth when she sees it, and may it be her companion through life; spare her from the snares of the unkind; May her years on the Earth be plentiful and a blessing to those around her. Amen.

Sally: "A Sarah Palin Chew Toy?? Wow, Mal, where'd you find this?"
Mal:You can find anything on the Internet if you look hard enough. It talks, too. 26 Palin quotes, in case you need Instant Rage!"
*ripcrinkletearcrinkle*
Mal: "a box of Chocolate Covered Scabs! I didn't know they still made these."
Glory: "a little place called the Aztec Candy Co. in New Mexico. An admirer sent one of their chocolate-filled -while -still -beating -hearts for Valentine's Day. I sent it back, but I figured you'd appreciate their wares more than I did."
*ripcrinkletearcrinkle*
Glory: "oh, honeybear! It's a diadem of mystic orange flame! How'd you know I used to wear one of these?"
Panda: "temple wall paintings in Assyrian ruins, a few emails to some anthropologists to follow up... the hard part was finding someone who could actually make jewelry out of orange flames."
*ripcaaarefullyseparateandunfold,preservingthewrappingpaper*
Sally: "Panda, for crying out loud, just rip the thing!"
Panda:"but, Sally, it's such nice paper, I don't want to ruin"--
Sally: "next year, I'm just getting you wrapping paper for Christmas."
Panda (holding up book): "_Fire & Nice: Getting Rid of this Polite Nice Guy Crap and Speaking up for Yourself_ This is actually a book? "
Sally: "You'll thank me later."
Panda: "Thank you, Sally."
Sally: "No! I said later! Read the book first!"
Panda: "ok, Sally. (looks straight at the Fourth Wall) From all of us at Malpanda's Journal, to all of you out in the Blogosphere... "
Mal: "Who's he talking to?"
Sally points. Mal looks at Fourth Wall, screams, and falls over onto the floor.
(all, in Unison, even Mal): MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Greetings to the people of Earth and associated Realms. Once again, I, the goddess Glorynnea, Keeper of the Orange Flame, Mother of Elves, Lady of Love, and once-Queen of the Fae, (etc) have borrowed this forum from my reluctant bearlike avatar in order to speak to you directly. I have several related points, but I will endeavor to be brief. First, in discussion with my avatar, we have decided that I should have a 'userpic' to denote specifically when it is I who is speaking, and for this purpose, I have cast, in the role of myself, the actress known as 'Kirsten Vangsness', whose image, with some slight alterations, should be somewhere on your screen as you read this. Secondly, in considering her candidacy, it has come to our attention that she has found a woman to whom she has pledged her life and heart, and therefore intends to imminently marry regardless of the illegality of that act. For them, I wish to say this: I, Glorynnea, goddess of Love, recognize that marriage. It and they have my blessing. May their years together be plentiful, prosperous, and happy. Third, as many provinces (my avatar's included), are engaged in political squabbles over the legality of 'gay marriage', I feel compelled to reiterate my position: If marriage is a sacred institution, then its nature is in the hands of the divine, and those who seek to keep from others a gift of the divine are asserting an ownership far beyond their rights. I, for one, personally consider this withholding to be tragic and barbaric; and in my long life, I've seen scant evidence that the oft-misquoted God of the Israelites is so narrow-minded as small minds like to believe He is. Conversely, if marriage is a civil institution, then civility should be applied in its application, with rules being made according to the overall good of society and with equal respect for each individual citizen. At this point in your history, preventing gay marriages serves neither function. (If I preach to the choir, may they be encouraged by it. If I preach to the stones, may they be moved.) ..... Fourth, our friend, the Shadow Lady, mourns the loss of her marriage; and we mourn with her. No marriage was ever really ruined because two people loved each other; but many are ruined when one person decides to stop.
