Thought (RPGs): Found in Translation
Aug. 22nd, 2004 10:10 pmOn the way back from Peter & Jennifer's wedding, Crystal and I stopped off at the nearby games store (Crossroad Games) for some quick window-shopping. Clearly, the D20 Assimilation (see below, "Casa De 20" entry) is even worse than I thought. I saw _Aberrant D20_, which was eerily similiar to the _Aberrant_ rulebook I already have--same pictures, same page layout, same flavor text, same headers and margins--except they added some little bits (flavor quotes for each super-power, a sidebar to explain magic doesn't exist because it's a sci-fi game, fer cryin' out loud) and the identically painted cover is now a hardcover. The redundancy was not why I probably won't buy it. I won't buy it because I classify _Aberrant_ as my superhero game using the Storyteller/White Wolf system, in case I ever need to lure a Goth into playing superheroes. I already *have* a D20 superhero game (Mutants & Masterminds, from Green Ronin) for luring D&D 3e fans into superheroing, not that the latter should be all that difficult. ("Hey, kids! Want some superhuman power?") M&M had some cool-looking supplements out,(eg. _Crooks_, somethinganother, and the superpretty mucho detailed _Nocturnals_) but for some reason D20 books tend to be fancy hardcovers, and therefore I can't fit many of them into my budget. Besides, I haven't yet managed to tap this supposed deep reservoir of D20 Players, so M&M books are more a case of stocking up so I can quickly take advantage of some possible future opportunity...that might never happen. They sure do look cool, though. Maybe for Christmas.
Anyway, the games that aren't D20 are running to other established systems for protection: Gurps and Tri-Stat, for example. (There was even a _Gurps In Nomine_, by the authors of _Gurps IOU_. (Now, if they'd written _Gurps Toon_, maybe.) Again, it was eerily similiar to its nonassimilated form, but not *as* eerily similiar. It had a new cover, and not a hard one. )
The games that aren't assimilated into some new system have advanced to new editions of their existing systems. I have now become an old grognard fogey who doesn't bother to learn the new editions unless forced to by other gamers. Champions 5th? nah, format looks confusing. Shadowrun 3rd? maybe if Sherri or Chris or someone decides to run some of it, otherwise no time, no time. Vampire: the Requiem? I'm running Vampire for the first time this con, but I'm using all the old stuff I've already got instead of skipping ahead, even though I still need to learn up on half of it. Marvel Universe? hah! uh, no. I hear they even have a new Gurps edition in the works. Anyone know how it will actually differ from the current version? I run Gurps so low-complexity now that it probably doesn't matter what edition anyway, but it would be nice to know what rules I'm glossing over or could be glossing over.
